Structural Engineering of the $30 M renovations and additions to the historic 160,000 sf library and adjacent link building originally designed by Paul Rudolph. The upgrade includes a 27,000 sf addition to accommodate a new entrance, group study spaces, a cafe and lecture spaces. Careful consideration to sequencing was needed to re-support the existing concrete footings in the link building to create a basement housing a special collections area. A new steel braced frame lateral system was stitched into the existing mechanical shafts to comply with the seismic upgrade code requirements.
