University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School – New Education & Research Building
Worcester, MA
Architect: ARC

Structural Engineering for a new 10-story academic and research building at UMass Medical School with a gross floor area of 354,000 sf. The construction cost is $350M.
The project aspires to be net-zero-ready and intends to be a leader in energy efficient lab design for the region. NERB will include a geothermal well field located in the quadrangle space fronting the building and building heat recovery systems along with a high-performance wall, modeled to minimize glare and heat gain, while offering views and daylight for the occupants.
NERB includes 8 floors with laboratory space designed for vibration sensitive equipment. Structure is designed for class A space, limiting vibration to 2000 micro-in/sec under footfall excitation. The biomedical research portion will include wet labs, benches, write-up spaces, hood/cabinet alcoves, linear equipment rooms, environmental rooms, procedure spaces, offices, conference rooms, and feature a vivarium on the basement level.
